🦻🏻 A lot of Greek people spoke English, but as a deaf person it was difficult at times in loud environments

Mykonos was meant to be the ultimate flop and drop holiday after a busy year. Think the kind where you lie by the pool, sip something cold, and continuously apply SPF50. We picked the island for sunshine, sea breezes and that perfect “not too hot” sweet spot - especially in October. Instead, the weather decided to go rogue. It rained. A lot. The kind of rain that makes you question some life choices, including packing only shorts and T-shirts.

But the island still had its moments. When the rain clouds finally cleared, Mykonos delivered some of the most amazing sunsets I’ve ever seen. The kind where the whole sky turns pink and red .

We had a car and so we explored every corner of the island anyway. Roads, is a generous term, most of them were dirt tracks that felt like they were designed for goats, not rental cars. As we were staying a little further out a car was essential. Mopeds and ATVs were also quite common.

We still managed one beautiful day in the sea and a bit of pool time, but the rest was a mix of exploring, dodging rainclouds and exploring the small streets of the town. Not the holiday we planned, but definitely one we’ll remember - plus we were able to relax too.

Must See 👀

Mykonos Town (Chora)

A maze of whitewashed buildings, tiny boutiques and hidden cafés. It’s the kind of place you can wander for hours, discovering something new around every corner. We walked around the streets a few times, both during the day and in the evening too.

Little Venice

What I imagined being a postcard‑perfect waterfront area filled with colourful balconies, narrow lanes and restaurants right on the water. It’s one of the most iconic spots on the island and perfect for wandering, photos and people‑watching. But... controversially, I think I was a bit disappointed by it. We visited a few times, we thought it may have been the greyness the first time but even in the sun, I still wasn't wow'd.

The Windmills (Kato Mili)

These historic windmills overlook the sea and offer some of the best views in Mykonos. They’re an easy walk from Little Venice and you get that classic Mykonos photo.

Ano Mera Village

A quieter, more traditional part of the island with a lovely central square and great local tavernas. It’s a nice break from the busier coastal areas and gives you a taste of everyday Mykonian life. There was quite a bit closed when we visited here, it was a Sunday and also we were on the cusp of the season wind down too.

The Beaches

Whether you’re after soft sand, clear water or a beach club vibe, Mykonos has plenty of options. Even with a chilled out itinerary, being able to explore the beaches, the clear waters and quiet spots is a must. The day we spend in the sea, we'd scouted out a few days earlier. We were the only ones there!

Food

There’s something quite nice about cooking simple meals in an Airbnb while the island does its dramatic weather thing outside.

The supermarkets were surprisingly well stocked with gluten free bits too. We used 2 of the main supermarkets there, AB and Flora Supermarkets (this was my favourite).

Pepper (Mykonos Town) - https://pepper-mykonos.com/

We loved Pepper so much we went twice. It’s casual, friendly and genuinely great for gluten free options. The staff know what they’re doing, the menu is clear, and the food is fresh and tastes great. Their Gluten Free Souvlaki Pita was absolutely amazing, so would recommend this.

Vegera (Mykonos Town) - https://www.vegera-mykonos.com/

A lovely spot for a relaxed dinner with proper Greek dishes. They were helpful with coeliac questions and happy to adapt where needed. I had the mushroom risotto which was lovely, and the restaurant sits right on the waterfront.

Final Thoughts

Mykonos is a brilliant choice if you’re after a chilled out holiday where you can explore at your own pace and enjoy simple days by the sea. It’s beautiful, easy to get around by car and has just enough going on without feeling overwhelming. That said, it’s definitely the kind of place I’d do for around five days rather than a long stay. Just enough time to unwind, explore the highlights and soak up the island vibe before moving on to the next adventure.
