🦻🏻 Most German people spoke English, but as a deaf person it was difficult at times in loud environments
Frankfurt wasn’t about museums, sightseeing or ticking off landmarks, this was a pure, unapologetic planespotting trip. A quick adventure built around big jets, busy runways and the kind of airport access you just don’t get in many places. It was a hot 35 degrees, but the sweat was still absolutely worth it for the aviation geekery alone.
Aviation Dreams
Frankfurt Airport Tour (XXL Tour)
The main event. Frankfurt does airport tours properly - you get up close to the action, learn how the airport runs, visit the firestations and see aircraft movements from angles you’d never get landside. The tour itself is all in German, but they give you a booklet that has everything in English. Even though you may not understand what is said, just being up close with a 747 is a beautiful experience.
The tour is 2hours long and only €24 (as of July25), so well worth the money.

Frankfurt's Viewing Platform
We got up early on Sunday and headed straight to one of Frankfurt’s dedicated viewing platforms - There are many around the airport. The one I visited was Aussichtsplattform Zeppelinheim Planespotting. There is a small Berlin Airlift Monument near by too.
With the hum of the autobahn in the background, its a wide open space and gives you a perfect view of the aircraft. It was easy enough to get to and from by bus.

Terminal 2 Terrace + McDonald’s
A classic combo. The terrace gives you another great vantage point over the ramo, and grabbing a McDonald’s in between spotting sessions felt like peak airport trip energy.

Hotel & Food
One of the hottest times of the year to visit a hotel without air con. The hotel is basic, no cups or kettle etc in rooms and the shower is one of those ones you go sideways in and scrape your nipples on the doors.... However, the hotel is in a decent location to airport, T2 is closer about 15 min walk, T1 is 25 min walk or you can get the train 1 stop for around €4 single. There is a bus X77 which stops near by.

Rewe supermarket 5 mins walk away and a couple of restaurants too. I went to an Italian restaurant as it was close by, linked here. It was nice, close to hotel after a long day and offered gluten free pasta.

Final Thoughts
For a planespotting getaway, Frankfurt delivered. The airport tour alone made the trip worth it, and the viewing platforms are some of the best you’ll find in Europe. I’d definitely go back, ideally for a bit longer, just to spend more time at the platforms and soak up the constant stream of aircraft. Next time, I’d stay somewhere with air‑con (a must in 35‑degree heat) and, if I had an extra day or two, I’d probably wander into the city itself. But for a pure aviation experience, 30 hours was a brilliant little escape.
